Barbie.....She just keeps reinventing Herself!

Did you know that Barbie is in her 50’s? She was first made by Mattel Toy Company in 1959. Her wardrobe then consisted of a zebra striped bathing suit, with blond or brunette hair and hoop earrings, and she was only $3 compared to prices today of $10 to $17000.00+ for vintage dolls. She is just as popular today as ever. While looking up some info on Barbra Millicent Roberts, which by the way is her real name. I wandered what would she look like in her 50’s? I stumbled across a cute picture online, and thought to myself, yes Barbie has aged well, and through the years she has had her share of controversy!

Do you remember seeing or having the Barbie’s pregnant friend by the name of Midge? Some parents were outraged and it was pulled off the shelf. The crazy thing was that people said it promoted teen pregnancy, but the story behind the doll was that she was married. I didn’t see the harm in it, because I never thought of a Barbie doll or others like her as a teenager. She was a grown woman who could be anything from an Astronaut to a gymnast, so what was the problem with being an expecting wife?

Other Barbie Controversies

I had the dolls, the jeep, the pets, and the dream boyfriends’ lol. Who hasn’t had a Barbie Doll growing up? One thing that has always fascinated me is that Barbie just keeps reinventing herself decades later. She surprised me again as me and my daughter were watching Toy Story 3, and she was there on the Big Screen with Ken. It was so hilarious, and they had their dream house. Watching it made me think of all my Barbie Jeep adventures as a child with my sisters, and our dream house.

Even though each one has their own individual name, they’re still a version of a Barbie doll. There are cynic’s who say her portions aren’t correct, her clothes aren’t appropriate, but guess what, she is only a toy. She’s an icon, and a brand. She lets little girls all over the world, from different cultures and nationalities know that just because they are females, they can do anything they put their minds too. There’s a little fashion and Barbie in all of us, and I can’t wait to share the world of Barbie with my little ones.

Fun hub! I always feel like a kid again whenever I see a Barbie. If you have a chance, check out a recent hub I wrote to celebrate Ken's birthday.

I just met a few friends at the neighborhood icehouse, and they all had Barbie stories to tell after I told them about your hub. It seems a sanitary pad was a common Barbie bed. Imagine the horror when their first periods happenend and their Moms explained what the pads were actually meant for . . .

I grew up with Barbie and my daughters grew up with Barbie. This woman has been so many things and had so many occupations, she just evolves with the times. Great hub.

@Sally that's hilarious but hey it just goes to show you imagination can go a long way! I remember when my brother would get mad at us He would pop the wheels off of our Barbie Jeep. We thought it was the end of the world....even though they could pop right back on. @BobbiRant It's so neat to see as fashion changes so does she. Still trendy and relevant!
